Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter of their family. Her father, a carnival barker, was killed when she was a small girl, requiring her mother to support her family through work as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth attended school, and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. After only two school years she left for an acting career. It was not without challenges. When she was offered a job as a model in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she was unable to secure jobs in the stage. When she was employed as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. As an usherette, she worked during the day and then was a part of the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first permanent acting gig. The study of drama helped her to graduate in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
